In this talk, Jonathan Sciarcon will provide community members with a brief overview of Arab-Jewish and Muslim-Jewish relations from the rise of Islam in the 7th century up through the 21st century.  He will also touch on the status of Jews under pre-modern Islamic empires and in modern majority Muslim and/or majority Arab nation states as well as Muslim-Jewish and Arab-Jewish relations in the light of the Arab-Israeli and Israeli-Palstinian conflicts.  

Johnathan Sciarcon is an Associate Professor of History and Judaic Studies and the Chair of the History Department at Denver University.  He regularly teaches courses on the pre-modern and modern Middle East, United States foreign policy in the Middle East, Israel/Palestine, and American political engagement with Israel.  His research focuses on Jews in Ottoman and post-Ottoman Iraq.  His book, Educational Oases in the Desert: The Alliance Israelite Universelle's Girl's School in Ottoman Iraq, 1895-1915 recently appreared on SUNY Press.
